Our esteemed institute, which was started in 1946, will be celebrating its Platinum Jubilee in June 2021 after completing 75 successful years. The institute was established with an aim to provide education of the highest standard in basic sciences to the students coming from rural and urban areas when there was a dearth of such institutions. Our institute is one of the oldest science colleges in India.

Navsari is a very old city. As per historical records, Parsis were the first settlers around 1050 - 1100 AD in India. As endorsed by our honorable prime minister Shri Narendrabhai Damodardas Modi, Parsi’s are a micro minority community who have never put forth any demands on the government or the nation but have given their very best in all fields to the nation. The community has proved the old saying : “Parsi, thy name is charity”, to be true by donating large amounts for establishing educational and healthcare institutions for the residents of Navsari and adjoining areas. In 1945 the scenario of Navsari was quiet different from what it is today. The total population was about 30,000 and there were only two high schools imparting education up to matriculation, conducted by the Bombay university. For higher education students had to go to Surat or Bombay. It was during this period that the S. B. Garda College Trust was established on 20th March 1945 and S. B. Garda Arts College was started in June 1945.

B. P. Baria Science Institute was established in 1946 by the donation of rupees three lakh by a Parsi philanthropist Shri Berjorji Pestonji Baria and in June 1946 S. B. Garda Arts College and B. P. Baria Science Institute came into existence. At that time there were no other institutions offering higher education in science in our region. In 1965, the college was bifurcated from the Arts faculty and B. P. Baria Science Institute began to function as a separate college. It is managed by the S. B. Garda College Trust (Minority) belonging to the Parsi community under Article 30 (2) of the Indian constitution. The Honorable Supreme Court has time and again pronounced landmark judgement’s asserting the fundamental right of the minority community to establish and manage educational institutions. The institute is housed in the campus of a 100-year- old heritage building with additional structures constructed on the 21783.64 sq. meters of land. The gross built-up area is 4117.11 sq. meters. It is a grant-in-aid co-educational degree college recognized under Section 2(f) and 12B of the UGC Act, 1956 and permanently affiliated to Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat.

Our institution is lucky to have a committed and supportive management and a dedicated and sincere staff. It is my firm belief that with this collaborative effort coupled with a strong and harmonious relationship with the student community, the institute will continue with its outstanding progress in the field of education. Our teachers are student - centric. They impart education in traditional ways complimented by modern tools of education, emphasizing on acquisition of knowledge and skills, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. This has helped our students to excel in their life by the overall development of their personality.

I conclude with a firm belief that our institute will always remain loyal to this honorable tradition by the dedicated, loyal and cohesive teamwork of all teaching and non- teaching staff. It is bound to grow and achieve outstanding heights with its futurist approach of the management in this platinum jubilee year and the years to follow.
